We're All in Our Places With Bright Sunny Faces!

Olympia sunflowers

We're all in our places with bright sunny faces!  Somehow as I was out admiring the sunflowers in my garden that phrase jumped into my mind - don't know for sure if I learned it in kindergarden?? Sunday school?  But apparently there it was tucked away in my memory, ready to jump to mind looking at these pretty summer flowers!

I first planted a couple of sunflowers several years ago, but never even thought about trying to gather their seeds to start off the following year's plants.  Now for the last two years, I have done just that - harvesting the fading blooms and keeping them as they dry up.  Then I shake out the seeds to store through the winter until spring planting time arrives.  And lo and behold - it works!  This year I planted a whole bunch of seeds, then before I could decide whether to thin them or not, the strongest plants began to do the thinning for me as they crowded out others.

Finally the burst of hot weather we had brought the flower buds to maturity - and one morning I was excited to see the first sunflower open up.  Now I have this whole row with their bright sunny faces capturing just a bit of summer for me every time I see them.

And I will definitely harvest some blooms again this year, so next summer will have sunny faces in the garden yet again!!
