Living Green Olympia: Olympia's Waterfront Boardwalk is Getting a Makeover

Olympia's Waterfront Boardwalk is Getting a Makeover

Olympia's Waterfront Boardwalk is getting a makeover!  The wooden boardwalk has been gradually deteriorating to the point of becoming unsafe in some sections, so the makeover is now underway!  First, in sections, the old boardwalk is being removed, including the creosoted pilings that supported it in the water.

The new boardwalk will be constructed over land, but will continue to let locals and visitors alike enjoy that stroll along the waterfront!  This has always been a real favorite spot as you can relax on benches and people watch; unwind as the sunset turns the sky into a glowing beauty over the sailboat masts; drool over boats of all types and sizes moored in the bay; or walk off that yummy dinner you just ate at one of the downtown waterfront restaurants.

Olympia's waterfront boardwalk is also used in many of the local festivals, from the Wooden Boat Fair to Harbor Days - what could compare with a walk along the water as you admire local arts and crafts offering in booths during the various fairs!

So, although the makeover will cause some disruptions as sections of the old boardwalk are closed off for replacement, the finished product will make Olympia's waterfront boardwalk better than ever!

That has been needed for years! I had a friend that worked at one of the radio stations in Olympia when I was working down here as a DJ. I always felt I was driving in to a bad part of town when I went there, even though it was just actually in need of a good update.

Hi Todd - Olympia's waterfront is still a really interesting mix of a working port with cranes, logs etc and then the very cool area around Farmer's Market with stores, restaurants galore.  You have to head back up this way and visit sometime :)
