Living Green Olympia: Take a Solar Tour in Thurston County WA (Yes Even with Clouds!)

Take a Solar Tour in Thurston County WA (Yes Even with Clouds!)

Thurston County, WA does have sunny days (truly we do - the sun is shining right now!!), but a whole lot of cloudy ones, too.  So, many people might not realize that solar power in Thurston County WA is actually a viable option even here!  If you want some proof of that, come check out the free solar tour this coming Saturday (September 25th) from 10-4.

There will be a number of residential & several commercial examples of how solar power can be an effective way to conserve on energy costs and use this environmentally sustainable resource to heat your building, your water etc.  Some of the solar installations are the more typical roof-top ones, but there are also examples of detached solar panels which you may not have even thought of.  Come take a look and see if solar is something that could actually work for you on your new or existing home!

Nancy - I wouldn't think it would help there. Thanks for sharing - I learned something new today!

Thanks Richard - Many people think it wouldn't be feasible to use solar here but there are a growing number of homes that do use at least some solar power.  A couple of years ago one of the homes on our annual Tour of Homes had such extensive solar power that they actually got a check back from the electric company!  That one really blew my mind!!

That is a great idea of a tour, Nancy!  I would think that would be very popular in this area, hhmm, I may have to seek a few of the solar homes out in this area and take my own private tour!

That'd probably be a fun tour Leesa!  I may have to do a followup blog too as today's paper has info about a "passive" home being built here now with NO heating system - it is built to be so energy efficient that the heating is done solely by solar and by human activity inside the house!  Gotta go see that one & learn more!
