Living Green Olympia: Storm In the Weather Forecast!! Quick Fill the Water Pitchers Up!

Storm In the Weather Forecast!! Quick Fill the Water Pitchers Up!

Our Olympia area weather report is calling for a stormy weekend ahead with rain and potentially high winds.  Probably the first of the wintry weather that can sometimes cause power interruptions.  And a reminder to me that people new to our area may not be used to some of the challenges that a power outage causes if you have a well and septic system.

Since both require electricity to power them, being without electricity means - no water!  Now that gets old in a big hurry!  It's pretty easy to get some candles lit for light and either light the fireplace or grab some extra blankets for warmth - but water is not that easy to replace!

Whenever there is wind in the forecast, we run some water into all the pitchers and other containers we can gather, plus some in a sink to use for toilet flushing.  And many people invest in a generator so that they can maintain power independently if the electricity is off for any extended period of time.  A generator can be a pretty good investment compared to a freezer full of thawed and ruined food!

So I'll be filling up a few pitchers with water - just in case!

Looking into your part of the country for a family member so I'll check it out.

Hi Glenn - and many housing areas are on city water and sewer so this would only be applicable for those who live more in the rural areas and are on well and septic.  Let me know if there is specific info I can forward to you for your family members, or have them check out our Living in Olympia page on Facebook - lots of local info and photos!  It's an awesome place to live!!!

Wow, that's the way to plan for the worst.  I would hate being without water!  Nice post, have a great weekend:)

Thanks Erika - and luckily we don't get that many power outages most years.  I figure if I have some water set aside for just in case, then most of the time the power stays on & I didn't even need it.  Hope you have a great weekend too :)

Mother winter is starting to rear her head here in Colorado as well.  Instead of water, warm jackets is the staple.

HI Cherise!  I think your weather gets considerably colder than ours does (we whine if it stays below 40 for several days - LOL).  Although this potential storm may bring the first snow of the seasons up in the mountains - skiiers will be excited!
