Living Green Olympia: A Few of My Favorite Holiday Bazaars in the Olympia Area

A Few of My Favorite Holiday Bazaars in the Olympia Area

It is so hard to believe that the holiday season is just around the corner - despite all of the early displays in the stores, showing Christmas ornaments, cards, decorations etc.  I'm not sure I'm ready yet - but I AM ready to enjoy the amazing crafts and handmade goodies at the upcoming bazaars in the Olympia area!  Browsing at the bazaars always seems to get me in a holiday mood really quickly as I start seeing the perfect gift for this person or that.  (Of course somehow I always find some 20 or 30 things that would be JUST right for my sister - but no, she is NOT getting that many gifts from me...)

The one coming up first on my DO NOT MISS list is "Homemade for the Holidays" - it will be Friday November 5th from 4-8 PM and Saturday November 6th from 9 AM til 4 PM at the Thurston County Fairgrounds in Lacey.  This is a large bazaar, with 4 buildings jam-packed with goodies.  It is free admission and parking, and I always end up leaving with a good sized bag of "finds".  (Don't forget to throw in one or two of your reusable bags to tote your buys!)  Past years have included finds like mother/daughter hats that look like strawberries or raspberries etc, wooden & hand painted holiday decorations, my father's favorite pickles, and hand painted wine carafe and glass sets.

Next up on my all star list is the Oly Bearzaar at Olympia High School on Saturday November 20th - the booths of crafts fill up the gym, the hallways, the cafeteria, and entry area.  There are so many things to look at that the first year I went to this bazaar I actually got lost and wasn't quite sure if I had missed any areas, or was just going in circles! One year, I found really fun place mats and table runners of so many cute fabric patterns that I think I left with at least 8 sets of them.

Another annual favorite of mine is the huge bazaar at St Martin's University on the Friday (noon - 5PM) and the Saturday (9-5) of Thanksgiving weekend.  The bazaar fills up the entire Pavilion as well as Worthington Center at St Martin's and gives you a great way to walk, walk, walk off all of that Thanksgiving turkey, dressing and pie.  Many years I get over there on Friday, and then end up going back Saturday as well to buy something that I couldn't decide about on Friday, but then can't get out of my mind.  One of my favorite past finds here was a booth of absolutely breathtaking lacy embroidered tablecloths, runners and other linen - I bought some for family and friends and kept some for myself - perfect for special occasions.  It is also my annual stop to stock up on jams of all imaginable flavors and on garlic sauces - yum!

So if you want to get yourself in a holiday mood, start some holiday shopping, or get ideas for things you can make if you are the crafty type - these are some really, really good bazaars in the Olympia area to check out!  See you there.

Hi Nancy ~ You're right, it's hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner. Nice pulling together of the Bazaars in the Olympia area. They're a great place to pick up unusual gifts for friends or family who are hard to buy for.

I love bazaars - they scream holidays and have tons of things I want but have no room for so I buy them and give them away :) which is even more fun
