Barb O'Neill's Family & Friends in Olympia WA make sure there actually IS a free lunch dinner at both Thanksgiving and Christmas - an amazing community event that is now in its 41st year! What began as one woman's generosity and compassion has grown, and grown....and grown. Barb O'Neill originally invited people into her own home so they could have companionship and a good meal at the holiday season; expanded it gradually and involved her downtown restaurant, as well as including more and more volunteers to help out. Barb died in 2008, but her wonderful idea did not die with her and remains alive and well via Barb O'Neill's Family and Friends, now a non-profit organization.
This year's Barb O'Neill's Family & Friends Christmas dinner will be served Saturday, December 18th from noon until 6 PM at United Churches in downtown Olympia. Besides a hearty meal, there will be free clothing. blankets and toys for those in need and even a gift boutique where kids can "shop" for family gifts.
In the spirit established by Barb O'Neill, there is no "test" of whether someone is in need before they can enjoy this event - it is for anyone and everyone who wants to come together to celebrate the holiday season and enjoy camaraderie with others. And there are lots of opportunities to get involved by contributing money or volunteering your time - in 2009, the combined holiday dinners served totaled more than 4000 meals, so we are talking a major event! Barb O'Neill's Family & Friends in Olympia - the holiday spirit indeed!!
