Incentives for Energy Improvements in Rental Homes

Improving energy efficiency is a "makes sense" goal for home owners.  A more comfortable home to live in and lower energy bills are great benefits. But when it comes to landlords, things get more complicated.  Many landlords would like to make their rental properties more energy efficiency for a variety of reasons, but the financial benefits of doing so typically go to the renter rather than the landlord.

This Thursday, February 13, 2014 from 12:00 - 4:30 PM, there will be a chance to hear some ideas about changing that dynamic, and participate in the conversation.  This event will be located at Thurston County Public Health & Social Services at 412 Lilly Rd NE, Olympia.  This Vision2Action community symposium should be a "don't miss" opportunity!

The program will be presented by Steve Abercrombie who is the president of the South Sound Chapter of the NW EcoBuilding Guild.  A panel will add more ideas from the perspectives of local property managerment company representatives, private landlords, renters, Puget Sound Energy and others.

There will also be breakout sessions where you can add your ideas and thougts to this process.  The cost for attending the event is $20 per person if paid in advance or $25 at the door, though it is FREE to landlors, property managers and renters!

I hope so too, Lottie! I've attended other Vision2Action symposiums on various topics & they've been very worthwhile! And a great way to bring together lots of different stakeholders with lots of different perspectives so the community conversation keeps on developing ideas.

Interesting to think the savings wouldn't be passed on to the landlord. There have to be some kind of credits for installing energy efficient features.

Suzanne, credits likely would indeed go to the landlords. But if tenants are responsible for paying their own power bills, the savings there would stay with the tenant. (And would likely lead to satisfied tenants who can more easily afford the homes they're renting, so still a good thing all in all).

Nancy, We are getting ready to start building and energy efficiency is top of mind. Anything we can do to save energy an money is the smart path to take.

Thanks Gene! And yes, we're pretty much in our normal winter pattern of rainy weather in the mid 40's - but with scattered sunny days that have us all thinking springtime!

I agree Debbie - and our building project is also as "green" & energy efficient as we could design! Sure should make for more comfortable living & affordable energy bills!

Those great rebates that are often offered, can make renovations more affordable for landlords. And the improvments often make it less expensive for renters to maintain a property. You know how I feel about green choices Nancy. :)

Hi David - interesting that you view Washington as being ahead of the curve on green homes.  I hadn't thought of it quite that way, but so many state residents love this state because of its natural beauty and all the outdoor recreation opportunities, so I do think there is a lot of value put on protecting those things we most appreciate and enjoy about where we live.
