Living Green Olympia: Run salmon, run!

Run salmon, run!

I have been noticing for a couple of weeks now that there are quite a few people gathering on the downtown bridge to watch the salmon come in from the sound as they get ready to spawn.  When I first moved to Olympia, one of the things I thought was most amazing was watching the salmon make their way up the fish ladders to spawn in the river.  It is amazing enough that they are able to return to the river where they are born, but seeing them try and try and finally succeed in getting up another step of the fish ladder was mesmerizing to watch!

So we headed to the Falls Park in Tumwater to check out the fish ladder action on Tuesday - taking along some visiting friends from Illinois as well as our newly arrived exchange student from Slovakia.  I figured this would be good entertainment/education for all!  Alas, the fish are not yet to the fish ladders - apparently still acclimating in the salt water to fresh water transition they make.  I guess we will have to go back in a couple of weeks to see the amazing journey!
